How painful is kidney transplant?

It is common to feel some discomfort in the first week after surgery. Your side may be sore, and you may also feel weak and tired while you are healing. Usually, recipients are able to get up and start slowly moving around one day after surgery.

Who can donate a kidney?

To donate a kidney, you must be in good physical and mental health. Donors must be 18 years or older. Donors will undergo testing to ensure:

  1. They are in good health and their risks for surgery are low.
  2. They have 2 good kidneys and can donate one of them for the recipient to have a good outcome.
  3. They do not have any risk factors or diseases that would compromise their lifespan or put them at higher risk for kidney disease for the remainder of their life.
What is the process of a kidney transplant?
  1. First, you have to consult your nephrologist. Pre-transplant workup for donor & recipient is done. Once both donor and recipient are found to be medically acceptable then can proceed to the next steps.
  2. Donor and recipient competency assessment is done. Legal approval is done by the appropriate authority. Then kidney transplant surgery is planned.
  3. On the Day of surgery, you may need additional injections to decrease the risk of rejection.
