Understanding Prostate Cancer

The prostate is a small gland in the pelvis and is part of the male reproductive system. About the size of a walnut, it's located between the penis and the bladder, and surrounds the urethra. We know that prostate cancer begins when cells in the prostate develop changes in their DNA.These changes tell the cells to grow and divide more rapidly than normal cells do. The abnormal cells continue living, when other cells would die.The accumulating abnormal cells form a tumor that can grow to invade nearby tissue.

The chances of developing prostate cancer increase as you get older. Most cases develop in men aged 50 or older. Many prostate cancers grow slowly and are confined to the prostate gland, where they may not cause serious harm. Prostate cancer that's detected early — when it's still confined to the prostate gland — has the best chance for successful treatment.

Our Approach to Treatment of Prostate Cancer

At Epitome Hospitals, we adopt a patient-centric approach for treatment, offering –

Complete Diagnosis & Evaluation: Prostate cancer diagnosis begins with a physical exam and a discussion of the patient’s history. Tests and procedures used for diagnosis include Prostate-specific Antigen Test (PSA), Digital Rectal Exam (DRE), Biomarkers test, Genomic test, Biopsy, TRUS & MRI

Active Surveillance and Management: Low-grade prostate cancer may not need treatment right away. For some, treatment may never be needed. Instead, doctors sometimes recommend active surveillance. In active surveillance, regular follow-up blood tests, rectal exams and prostate biopsies may be performed to monitor progression of your cancer. If tests show your cancer is progressing, you may opt for a prostate cancer treatment such as surgery or radiation

Treatment: There are multiple ways to treat prostate cancer. Our doctors may recommend one of the following –

    • Surgery – Laparoscopic Prostatectomy and Robotic Prostatectomy
    • Radiation therapy
    • Chemotherapy
    • Hormonal therapy
Overactive Bladder Treatment

Frequently Asked Questions

Prostate cancer doesn't usually cause symptoms at first. In time, signs and symptoms may develop, including:

  • Facing difficulties in starting or stopping when trying to urinate or urinating.
  • Constant need of urination, especially at night
  • Frequent urination
  • A painful or burning sensation while urinating or ejaculating.
  • Blood in urine or semen
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Back pain, hip pain or pelvic pain

Some of these symptoms are common and can be caused by many different conditions. Having them does not definitely mean you have prostate cancer. But it's important to get them checked by a doctor.

    • Older age. Your risk of prostate cancer increases as you age. It's most common after age 50.
    • Family history. If a blood relative, such as a parent, sibling or child, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, your risk may be increased. Also, if you have a family history of genes that increase the risk of breast cancer (BRCA1 or BRCA2) or a very strong family history of breast cancer, your risk of prostate cancer may be higher.
    • Obesity. People who are obese may have a higher risk of prostate cancer compared with people considered to have a healthy weight, though studies have had mixed results. In obese people, the cancer is more likely to be more aggressive and more likely to return after initial treatment.
    • Swelling or Inflammation of the Prostate: Chronic inflammation of the prostate, known as prostatitis, may contribute to an elevated risk of developing prostate cancer.
    • Eating High Fatty Food: Diets high in red and processed meats, along with a low intake of fruits and vegetables, may increase the risk of prostate cancer.

Factors that can increase your risk of prostate cancer include -

    • Smoking: Smoking is associated with an elevated risk of various cancers, including prostate cancer.

    • There's no sure way to prevent prostate cancer, but it is possible to reduce the risk.

      • Adopt an ‘anti-inflammatory diet’ - Low in red meat, sugar, processed foods, and dairy products, and high in foods that fight inflammation, such as brightly-colored vegetables.
      • Exercise to maintain a healthy weight - Exercise has been shown to reduce a man’s chance of developing lethal forms of prostate cancer. Obesity is linked to increased risk of fatal prostate cancer and of prostate cancer recurrence.
      • Watch your calcium intake - Very high amounts of calcium may increase risk of aggressive prostate cancer.
      • Switch to plant-based protein and fish - Saturated fat in red meat is a cause of inflammation, which is associated with cancer and other chronic diseases. Avoid trans fatty acids (e.g., margarine, packaged baked goods).
      • Others -
        • Include cooked tomatoes, which may be beneficial, and cruciferous vegetables (like broccoli and cauliflower) into many of your weekly meals.
        • Avoid smoking & drinking alcohol
        • Seek medical treatment for stress, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and depression. Treating these conditions may save your life and will improve your survivorship with prostate cancer.
        • Relax and enjoy life. Reducing stress in the workplace and home will improve your survivorship and lead to a longer, happier life.
