Understanding Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI)

Stress incontinence is involuntary leakage of urine that happens when you exert yourself physically or an activity puts pressure on the bladder. Movements like coughing, sneezing, running or heavy lifting can cause mild SUI. If the incontinence is severe, urine may leak when performing less forceful activities such as standing up, walking, or bending over.

Stress incontinence is not related to mental stress. And is more common in women. Stress incontinence may limit your work and social life. Treatment can help you manage the condition and improve your quality of life.

Frequently Asked Questions

The leaking of urine during any activity that causes an increase in abdominal pressure. Like sneezing, coughing, laughing, jumping, exercising, lifting heavy objects, during sexual intercourse.  The leakage can be just as a drop or two, a squirt, or even a stream of urine.

  • Skin rash or soreness - Prolonged contact with urine can cause skin to be sore or to break down. This can happen with severe incontinence if you don't use moisture barriers or incontinence pads. Change pads often and use continence pads rather than menstrual pads to prevent skin sores.
  • Emotional influence - Stress incontinence can lead to the person feeling embarrassed. It can disturb their work, social life and relationships. Some people also feel embarrassed that they require pads and incontinence garments.
    • Progressing age - Physical changes that occur with age, such as muscles getting weaker, can increase the likelihood of experiencing stress incontinence.
    • Higher body weight - Being overweight or obese relates to a higher risk of stress incontinence. Excess weight increases pressure on the abdominal and pelvic organs.
    • Previously done pelvic surgery - The muscles in our body that support the bladder and urethra can get weakened by hysterectomy in women and prostate cancer surgery in men, increasing the risk of stress incontinence.
    • Type of childbirth - Women who’ve had a vaginal delivery are more likely to experience urinary incontinence. In case of obstructed labour, women who have had a forceps delivery may also be at a higher risk.
